I have ridden the famous Segway many years ago, and was impressed with it, Philine. However, it is not much more sporty than riding a motorcycle.

I wonder why these riders all feel the need of knee pads and helmets?
Philine: I knew that you experienced the Segway - many thanks, Ray!

Ce ne doit pas être évident de rester en équilibre dessus.
Philine: Merci bien, Martine!
I'd love to try it! I saw a similar situation in Italy - tourists getting a little lesson before being taken on a tour of Rome. One poor lady lost control, however and slammed into the curb. She was not wearing protective gear as these folks are.
Philine: Yes, it is an international phenomenon. Oh, the poor lady! Many thanks, Elizabeth!
i tried this on a couple of occasions, which was fun, Philine. i tried the skateboard but could not quite get the hang of that one!
Philine: Oh, you are a very sportive, young man!

Interestingly enough we saw a group of people in Munich being taught how to ride these in an urban environment
Philine: Yes, it is a global phenomenon. I see them sometimes in M ünster, too. Many thanks, Chris!

They do look a lot of fun. My brother has done this on one of the crusie ship day excursions and I was tempted to have a go when I saw them for hire when I was in San Francisco; time was against me then, though. St Malo is a beautiful place.
Philine: I suppose that the segways came from the States. I am not sure if the users of that vehicle see as much in the cities as us walkers, and photographing is not possible. Yes, the old grey St. Malo is a very charming town, j'adore cette ville.
Merci bien, Alain!
As I recall the bloke who invented these lost control of one he was riding and fell off a cliff
Philine: You are right. "The millionaire owner of the Segway company has died after falling from cliffs while riding one of his firm's motorised scooters.
Jimi Heselden, 62, crashed into the River Wharfe while riding the vehicle round his estate in Thorp Arch, Boston Spa, West Yorkshire, on Sunday (2010).
He was pronounced dead at the scene. The scooter was found in the water."
Many thanks, Bill!

So these people use their Segways to stand still. It doesn't make sense.
Philine: Haha - but in this position I could photograph them. Heel bedankt, Louis!
I like the contrast of old architecture with new walking technology together.
Philine: Thank you for the point you noticed, Jacquelyn!
it's a great shot but i think that the segways look kind of dumb Philine....petersmile
Philine: I were not able to use those scooters. They are not very popular in our cities. Many thanks, peter!
I might be getting old but I rather fancy a go on one of them.
Philine: I am surprised to read your courageous words, but I understand: The former motorcyclist is looking for an adventure. Many thanks, Brian!

Before, when I lived in Amsterdam, I´ve seen lots of them too. Moving around while only standing could be kind of boring. I once heard that the first Segways where used inside big buildings (offices), but don´t know if thst is true.
