photoblog image The Abbey Church

The Abbey Church

Finally after about one hour - with many view- and photostops- I entered the modest, but elegant Gothic abbey church (built 1446-1521).  I had the feel to be in heaven and I was thankful to have managed the steep way after my two hip operations in the last years - much light streamed in through the windows and I tried to ignore all the people around me. I wished I could hear some organ music in the background as I experienced in other churches and light on a candle, but probably the most people were only sightseers. I read that the Benedictines are not  present during the summer season. It must be a pleasure to attend a service with them here or to listen to a spiritual concert.

Holy Michael, the Archangel,

defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

I like the way you have presented this material, Philine.
Philine: I could have posted this church with lots of visitors, but I didn't want that -many thanks, Ray!
i think your use of the word elegant is clearly evident from the pictures, Philine.
Philine: Many thanks, Ayush, I could have used also the word 'sublime'.
A beautiful post, Philine!
Philine: Many thanks, Elizabeth!

Well done on making it; my hips are obviously working well. I can imagine that Benedictines get fed up with all tourists and seek spiritual relief well away from them. I would imagine that it winked be very special to attend service with them.
Philine: Formerly I was also a good walker like you. Some of my friends have now problems with the knees and feet. You might be right about the Benedictines. I saw only one nun. Many thanks, Alan, and enjoy your day at the ocean! It must be wonderful.

I do like the colour of the stone here Philine, granite perhaps. That is a fine prayer and I enjoyed reading it.
Philine: The buildings of Mont St. Michel are constructed of granite, but there is some limestone in the cloister. I wish you a wonderful day in Garmisch- Partenkirchen. I hope the weather will be better. Will you go up to the Zugspitze? Many thanks, Chad!

There is a wonderful statue of Archangel Michael in the centre of Munich Philine
Philine: I don't know that statue. Good wishes for your day-out into the Alps. Many thanks, Chris!
I can feel this with you, Philine!
Philine: I knew that you would feel in the same way- heel bedankt, Ginnie!
How I would love to go inside that building, thanks for sharing it with us. It is not my Vertigo that would stop me doing all those steps but my Heart issues, I don't like pushing things too far these days.
Philine: I understand you well, Brian! I am sure that you would have loved this church, its cloister, and the other buildings of this Benedictine abbey. I bought now a book about Mont St. Michel and have to recognise that I didn't see all the buildings. This means that I have to return one day and to stay at a hotel in order to experience sunrise and sunset and high flood and especially a service in the church. Many thanks!

Een indrukwekkende gebouw. Ik kan mij de atmosfeer met een dienst heel goed indenken.
Philine: Ja, dit kan ik ook - maar mijn kennis in Frans zou beter zijn. Heel bedankt, Louis!
The spiritual importance to you is palpable here.
Philine: - despite the lots of tourists here - many thanks, Mary!
You clearly found your visit here very rewarding Philine
Philine: Yes, I did -but after buying a book about Mont St. Michel I realise what I have not seen yet. I have to return one day. Many thanks, Bill!
