photoblog image In Mother's hands

In Mother's hands

This Romanesque Madonna with Child belongs to the oldest gems in the Erfurt Dome (1055) - St. Mary could look a bit happier, maybe, she already knows what Little- Jesus will be suffering. In any case she is protecting him by her big hands.

Depictions of the Madonna and Child come in many strengths, don't they. This one looks to be on the gloomy side..
Philine: This photo is not the best one. Many thanks, Chris!

Mary also realises that the "terrible twos" and the "teenage years" will be all too soon. Of course, Jesus was no the normal teenager so perhaps would would cause Mary less angst.
Philine: Mary might think of the crucifixion. But you are right Jesus was not the normal teenager. Many thanks, Alan!
A fine picture Philine. The baby has the face of an adult
Philine: Yes, he is wiser and more well- mannered than the normal babies. Many thanks, Bill!

I have mentioned with my last comment that the old Christians had some strange interpretations. Mary hails from a very poor family in a very poor neighbourhood (Nazareth). She would hardly ever have sat on a throne. And that dress... The artist probably made a figurative interpretation.
Philine: Yes, a figurative interpretation - heel bedankt, Louis!
