Spotted in a private house with garden nr. Südlohn at the German/Dutch border - The chicken is already an old lady (10 years old) and lives mostly inside the house as the Dutch landlady of the private garden told me, last autumn she laid her last eggs, she is the only chicken of this family, for she would not cope living together with other chickens, because she would be too weak to defend her own area in the pecking order. She seems now to be content with her stoic and quiet life in retirement. Sometimes she will be carried outside to enjoy the sun. I forgot to ask after her name. I like to call her 'Aneke' or 'Mutti' as Pauline from Cornwall named one of her chickens. Aneke didn't feel disturbed in any way as we passed her on our way to the toilet. It is fine to see her receiving her well deserved 'charity'/Gnadenbrot as aged lady.
