photoblog image The British architect David Chipperfield in Berlin

The British architect David Chipperfield in Berlin

"A stone facade (pics  in the centre and below) with slim columns fronts the David Chipperfield-designed James Simon Galerie, the architect's new building on Museum Island in Berlin.

The gallery will function as a new entrance for the cluster of cultural buildings located on an island in the Spree river, an area that David Chipperfield Architects has been re-masterplanning since 1999."

It is interesting to see how Chipperfield was inspired by the historic architecture (19th century) around, so that we can notice the contrast and the togetherness of the buildings (James Simon Gallery, Neues Museum, Altes Museum, Pergamonmuseum, Palace, Humboldt Forum, Dome ...).  In general, Berlin as capital of our country is still a big building site, even 30 years after the re-unification ...

The James Simon Gallery has just been opened last Friday, also with the presence of Mrs. Merkel. The gallery is named after patron of the arts James Simon (1851-1932), a German Jewish philanthropist and maecenas during the Wilhelmine period, who donated his collection to the city at the start of the 20th century, for example the famous Nefertiti bust , who has become a Berliner. David Chipperfield has become a half- Berliner.

I'll take a longer break from SC being away to Berlin and Brandenburg ...  I hope to take some better and closer pictures of the new James Simon Gallery.

Old and new - nice montage and interesting info!
I have some vague memories of Berlin from visiting there years ago, Philine, but I'd really need to go back to do it justice.

Britain has some renown architects with some significant buildings around the world. I was not aware of David Chipperfield, though. He has an extensive portfolio of projects around the world. I like his work shown here.

Enjoy your time away.
Some fine buildings. Have a good break and I look forward to seeing your pictures when you return

The pillars and pseudo pillars in most shots make this a cohesive collection of shots.

The mixture of old and new architecture makes it very interesting.
I'm not particularly impressed by Chipperfield's work - the first image at the top left looks like some of the worst of the Soviet era.
a nice collection of old and new buildings, Philine. enjoy your break.
