The gallery will function as a new entrance for the cluster of cultural buildings located on an island in the Spree river, an area that David Chipperfield Architects has been re-masterplanning since 1999."
It is interesting to see how Chipperfield was inspired by the historic architecture (19th century) around, so that we can notice the contrast and the togetherness of the buildings (James Simon Gallery, Neues Museum, Altes Museum, Pergamonmuseum, Palace, Humboldt Forum, Dome ...). In general, Berlin as capital of our country is still a big building site, even 30 years after the re-unification ...
The James Simon Gallery has just been opened last Friday, also with the presence of Mrs. Merkel. The gallery is named after patron of the arts James Simon (1851-1932), a German Jewish philanthropist and maecenas during the Wilhelmine period, who donated his collection to the city at the start of the 20th century, for example the famous Nefertiti bust , who has become a Berliner. David Chipperfield has become a half- Berliner.
I'll take a longer break from SC being away to Berlin and Brandenburg ... I hope to take some better and closer pictures of the new James Simon Gallery.
