Berlin Mitte: The Hackesche Höfe

"The Hackesche Höfe is a notable courtyard complex  situated adjacent to the Hackescher Markt in the centre of Berlin. The complex consists of eight interconnected courtyards, accessed through a main arched entrance at number 40 Rosenthaler Straße.

The complex was designed in the Jugendstil (or Art Nouveau) style by August Endel, and the first courtyard is adorned with a magnificent facade of polychrome glazed brick. The construction of this project, launched in 1906, follows a pattern of clear separation between residential areas, crafts, trade and culture, which distinguishes it from the courtyards of the 19th century." The main picture shows a very quiet courtyard, we were sitting there for some minutes, whereas the pic on the right bottom shows a crowdy courtyard with restaurants and cafés. Working, housing and leisure come together in this complex of eight courtyards.

I especially like the biggest image showing all the foliage. In the heat of summer of in the city, this would giving feeling of coolness especailly where it almost envelopes some of the windows.
Philine: It is a wonderful place in the hustle and bustle of this big city. We had some very hot days, but now autumn seems to be appearing. Many thanks, Alan!

The combination of agreeable if understated architecture and greenery always appeals Philine
Philine: I recall that you and Chad have been there, too. Many thanks, Chris!
These are fine looking buildings Philine. I particularly like the one top left

I like this concept very much Philine. The British have never designed good communal living, though I think things are improving slowly.
