photoblog image Everybody knows this boy ...

Everybody knows this boy ...

he brings happiness and tears using his bow and arrow. Giovanni Baglione (1566-1644), Sacred and Profane Love, before 1603.  "Baglioni reacted to Caravaggio's "Love conquers All" (Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museeen, Berlin),  by allowing earthly love to triumph. With this counter- image , Baglione wished to mock his rival Caravaggio." I saw recently this painting in the Museum Barberini in Potsdam nr. Berlin.

I cannot stop thinking that the standing figure is female, Philine.
Philine: You are rigtht - the Sacred Love is female. Many thanks, Ray!
The Cherub looks a bit frightened... Nice detail!
Philine: Amor himself has sometimes problems, Elizabeth, many thanks!

Poor little lad, he looks quite vulnerable. The earthly temptations of the flesh are pressing down on him..
Philine: Your description is wonderful. Many thanks, Chris!

I see a female form in the image. If it is the child's mother, the child looks very concerned. Perhaps he has been misbehaving? Of course, I probably completely wrong and the artist had a very different idea.
Philine: This is the earthly LOVE, Alan, an allegory! Many thanks!
I am not sure mocking Caravaggio would have been a good idea. He was a bit inclined to kill people
Philine: Haha, a good point! - Yes, he is told to have been a murder. Many thanks, Bill!
The Cherub has rather a strange expression on his face. You have taken a very good picture Philine, this sort of thing isn't easy to do.
The painting is wonderful in detail.
